'Honestly, I think' - Paul Scholes issues verdict on Newcastle United's Champions League chances

Newcastle United were beaten by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night as their Champions League hopes were dented

Paul Scholes is not confident about Newcastle United's chances of progressing through the Champions League group stages. The Magpies suffered a huge setback on Tuesday night when they lost to Borussia Dortmund in Germany, making it back-to-back defeats against the Bundesliga giants.

The defeat leaves Eddie Howe's men bottom of their group, three points - plus head-to-head record - behind leaders Dortmund and two points behind Paris Saint-Germain in second, while AC Milan are now also a point ahead. Not only that, but Newcastle next face PSG away from home, and if they come through that game with a chance of progression, they must then host an improving AC Milan side to finish the group stage campaign.

Those factors have Manchester United legend Scholes feeling as though Newcastle's Champions League journey may be coming to an end.

"Honestly, I think Newcastle are out," he said on TNT Sports on Wednesday night. "If PSG beat them over there, which I expect them to do, they are out. I think Newcastle were unlucky last night.

"I don't think it was the best Dortmund side, we have seen better Dortmund sides, but it's always tough over there, Joelinton missed that header, and that would have given them a real chance. I think it's going to be really difficult for Newcastle."
