What Eddie Howe had to say on Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak as he nears a return to action.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe remained tight-lipped over Alexander Isak’s injury comeback.

The Magpies’ club-record signing hasn’t played since September after injuring his thigh on international duty with Sweden. He was nearing a comeback a month later but suffered a re-injury.

Howe said last week the 23-year-old was “very close” to a return to full training. Asked for an update after the goalless draw at Arsenal, Howe remained coy.

He said: “He’s doing well, he’s getting closer, and that’s all I can update you with.”

According to the Daily Telegraph, Isak has returned to full training and could play a part in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round clash at League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old has made just three appearances for the Magpies following his £60million summer move from Real Sociedad.

The striker scored on his debut against Liverpool and had another ruled out for offside as Newcastle succumbed to a 2-1 defeat after Fabio Carvalho’s 98th-minute winner.

He started back-to-back draws with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth at St James’ Park but has not been seen since.
