Will Matt Targett stay at Newcastle United following his successful loan spell from Aston Villa?

Eddie Howe failed to give a definitive answer over Matt Targett’s future at Newcastle United.

The left-back ended his successful loan spell from Aston Villa with a 2-1 win over Burnley, a result which relegated the Clarets from the Premier League.

Targett played every minute of the 16 games he was available for - helping the club surge out of the bottom three and into an 11th-placed finish.

United reportedly have a £15million option to buy the 26-year-old - but a decision is yet to be made following the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

Asked about what’s next for Targett, Howe said: “I think it’s difficult one to give you any direction on that in respect to his club.

“We’ll wait and see.”

Targett has already expressed a strong desire to stay at St James’ Park,

“I think everyone knows what I want but it’s up to the club,” Targett said after the 2-0 win over Arsenal last week.

“It’s a massive project, an exciting project. I’m sure everyone wants to be a part of it.

“I’ve loved every single minute of it. It’s been an incredible place to play my football.”
