Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier is hopeful his calf injury is nothing serious after being forced out of the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

First-half goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon put the Magpies 2-0 before Trippier withdrew in the 52nd minute. His replacement Tino Livramento added a third in stoppage time.

United head coach Eddie Howe admitted afterwards Trippier's issue was a concern. He said: “Kieran felt something in his calf and had to come off the pitch. That is a concern for us, although I don’t know how serious it is at this moment."

Providing an update on Instagram, Trippier said: "Great win for the team today. Frustrating to go off injured, hopefully it’s nothing too serious."

Howe's side now have a nine day break before they visit Chelsea a week on Monday. Newcastle are four points above the Blues, who have a game in hand, with both teams locked a race for European qualification.

Trippier is set to attend the North East Football Writers' dinner this evening where he collect his Player of the Year award.

The 33-year-old has missed just three matches this campaign and will hope the period between Wolves and Chelsea will be enough time for the England international to recover.
