One reported Magpies target is said to be set to make a major announcement on his future.

Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij is reportedly set to make a decision over his future as the Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur transfer target approaches the end of his current contract.

The former Feyenoord centre-back has spent the last five seasons at Inter Milan after moving to the San Siro on a free transfer from Serie A rivals Lazio in the summer of 2018. During that time he has become a two-time Super Coppa Italia winner as well as landing the Serie A title and Coppa Italia over a highly successful stint with the Nerazzurri.

However, doubt remains over De Vrij’s future with Simone Inzaghi’s side after negotiations over an extension to his current contract failed to reach a successful conclusion. Reports in Italy suggest Inter remain hopeful they can convince the 30-year-old to extend his time with the club but De Vrij is said to be keen to find a new challenge.

The 59-times capped Dutch international worked under current Spurs manager Antonio Conte during his time in charge at the San Siro and there have been suggestions a reunion could happen should De Vrij become a free agent at the end of the season.

Newcastle are also believed to be keen on the experienced defender as they continue to build their squad with the aim of progressing towards becoming a consistent challenger for major trophies at domestic level and in European competition.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato have now confirmed Inter have offered a two-year extension to De Vrij’s current deal and any delays in concluding negotiations are not over financial issues but the player wanting reassurances he will get the game-time he desires. The report also states De Vrij is ‘looking around’ at other options and will ‘clarify his choice’ to Inter and other interested clubs over the next week.
