Newcastle United, according to reports in Spain, are keen on Marco Asensio.

The Premier League rumour mill is in full flow this summer - but the only difference this time is, Newcastle United are a real part of the conversation.

It’s fair to say the Magpies might well be the most talked about and mentioned football club on the planet when it comes to transfers. Roll the clock back 12 months, and that couldn’t be further from the reality.

The latest name to be linked with Eddie Howe’s side is Real Madrid and Spain forward Marco Asensio.

Now, it remains to be seen whether the Magpies ARE actually interested in the player, however Spanish publication AS do believe a move to the Premier League and United is a possibility.

Their latest report states: “Uncertainty is setting in for the future of Marco Asensio... he still has no renewal proposal from Real Madrid. Now it is Newcastle that wants the Spaniard for next season. As AS has learned, the English team wants the Balearic Islands to be the cornerstone of the new project. After the arrival of the Arab owner, Mohamed bin Salman, The Magpies want to become the new candidates for the Premier title , something they have not achieved since 1927, although they came close to the title in the 1990s (it was second in 1995 -96 and 1996-97).”

What we do know is Howe is keen to add a right winger to his side for next season and Asensio can certainly do that job.

However, whether this story is a tool for stoking out other interest or a new deal, remains to be seen. See Hugo Ekitike - and his agent - for evidence of such already this summer.

The report continues: “Newcastle, after saving (themselves from relegation) last season at the stroke of a checkbook (102 million euros in transfers during the winter market) , wants to set up a multimillion-dollar project to be able to hunt down the big clubs in England. The English team has set its sights on La Liga in order to strengthen itself for next year: to the well-known signing of Trippier (31) last winter, the names of Asensio himself, Carrasco (28), Lodi (24) are added or Fekir (28), as possible reinforcements for Las Urracas.”

Asensio is out of contract in 2023 and is attracting interest from AC Milan and Arsenal, although Liverpool are said to be the player’s most keen admirers.
