Anthony Gordon reflected on “the best day” of his life after representing England for the first time against Brazil.

The 23-year-old had featured for the Three Lions at junior level but finally made his senior bow in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat. A late goal from Real Madrid-bound Endrick negated any post-match celebrations but Gordon was still bursting with pride at the full-time whistle.

In truth, the Newcastle United winger was one of England’s brightest sparks in an otherwise dismal Wembley display. The five-time World Cup winners - spearheaded by Bruno Guimaraes in midfield - edged out Gareth Southgate’s men to send a reality check before Euro 2024.

Gordon gave a solid account of himself to give the Three Lions boss plenty of food for thought. England will regroup and go again when they face Belgium, ranked fourth in the FIFA standings, on Tuesday.

Speaking to the BBC post-match, Toon talisman Gordon reminisced about his younger days, with his dream of playing for England now becoming a reality. He said: “Tonight was by far the best day of my life. I envisioned it a little differently, with a goal and a win maybe, but I can’t ask for too much.

“This has been my long-term dream I’ve had since I can remember. Four, five years of age. To achieve it just means absolutely everything to me.

“I haven’t just envisioned it in the past couple of years when you’re a professional, running around my garden recreating Rooney and Gerrard’s goals. It’s an amazing moment for me.”
