Sam Fender is expected to announce the long-awaited show today

Sam Fender is set to announce a mammoth headline show at St. James' Park, the home of Newcastle United, today.

The North Shields star has been teasing the news on social media in recent days and was spotted filming what looked to be promotional material at the stadium last week.

Fender all but confirmed the announcement on Thursday evening when he wrote: "We’ve got really big news, really really big news tomorrow…"

With a capacity of over 50,000, a sell-out gig at the stadium will be the star's biggest headline show to date, eclipsing the set at Finsbury Park - Crowd praise the ‘unreal’ night for local hero">Finsbury Park in July.

The 'Seventeen Going Under' singer is an avid Newcastle United fan, famously spotted drinking with fans on takeover day last year before turning up to a BBC Breakfast interview the next morning hungover.

Beady-eyed fans spotted another reference to the impending St. James' Park announcement in an interview the 28-year-old gave to Grammy.com at the end of last month.

He said: "Everything in the UK is f—ing skyrocketing at the moment in terms of our career. We're doing a f—ing huge headline show at home which we're gonna announce really soon, like 50,000 people. The reason why I was talking about this — I wasn't just outright bragging — is because it’s really humbling to come over here when nobody f—ing knows who we are."
