One Newcastle United star received the anger of the Blackburn Rovers supporters in Tuesday's FA Cup fifth round tie at Ewood Park.

Newcastle United came through a stern test against Championship club Blackburn Rovers to secure a place in the FA Cup quarter final - and one Magpies star had extra reason to be pleased with the win.

Eddie Howe's men looked to be on their way into the last eight of the competition for only the second time since 2007 when in-form forward Anthony Gordon fired them in front with just under 20 minutes remaining at Ewood Park. But Rovers got themselves back on level-terms when an error from Magpies defender Jamaal Lascelles led to an equaliser from Sammie Szmodics as the tie went into extra-time.

Both sides had chances to claim a win in the additional 30 minutes but it was a penalty shoot-out that decided a nervy contest as Martin Dubravka's save from Dominic Hyam that sent the Magpies into Wednesday night's quarter-final draw alongside the likes of Manchester City and Leicester City. One feature of the win at Ewood Park was the home fans' relentless booing of Magpies defender Kieran Trippier during the first 90 minutes of the game. The England international was eventually replaced by Tino Livramento as the game made its way into extra-time and was given a tough time by the Rovers home fans.

The reason behind the booing of Trippier lies earlier in his career after the Magpies star enjoyed a successful four-year spell at Blackburn's local rivals Burnley. After spending time on loan at Turf Moor, Trippier became a permanent member of a Clarets squad managed by Eddie Howe in January 2012 before going on to enjoy success under Sean Dyche when he was named as successor to the current Magpies boss nine months later.

Speaking to the Under the Cosh podcast, Trippier reflected on his time at Burnley, saying: “He (Sean Dyche) was just a brilliant manager for Burnley and his record speaks for itself.  To be fair, he had no budget there as well. The players we signed were either free transfers or a couple of hundred grand.  The year we got promoted, I think we spent about £500,000 and that was on Ashley Barnes.  But with that team spirit we had, our team might not have been as good as the Leicesters or whoever, but we had that togetherness and that takes you even further.

"After the season we got promoted there were a few clubs interested.  There was obviously Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool before they got (Nathaniel) Clyne as well. It was either me or him going to go to Liverpool.  The year we got promoted, I only had a year left on my contract and Dyche wanted me to sign a contract that had a release clause.  I thought it made sense for me to play 38 games in the Premier League and get that experience.”
