Burn has been a key asset for Newcastle United this season, proving himself to be a strong defensive presence in recent performances, and played a vital role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup campaign in which he demonstrated remarkable versatility by performing solidly both as a left-sided centre-back and as a left-back.
The 32 year-old defender has been able to provide crucial cover for injured teammate Lewis Hall, whose foot injury ultimately ended his season.

Thomas Tuchel, who witnessed the game, was reportedly really impressed with his performance.

The announcement was made at 11am on Friday, during which the England Twitter page stated: “Earning a place in an England squad for the very first time. Congratulations, Dan Burn!”
The news sparked mixed reactions, with one user commenting: “Not everyone will agree, but I think he deserves his call-up! He’s been consistent at a high level for a few seasons now.”
However, others were less supportive, with some criticizing Burn’s pace, saying: “He isn’t good enough. His acceleration is too slow—not the right time.”

He plays regularly for Newcastle, for a Champions League club, competes for Champions League and is a leader. He is a very solid defender and leader in the group.

“I had a very impressive phone call, very impressive messages with him that made me very comfortable in this this call up in that we will have picked a top team player that will help us to build the right team.”
England are set to begin their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign against Albania on March 21, and against Latvia three days later on the 24th. Both matches will be played at Wembley.
