Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar has been crowned Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant Outside London at the prestigious 2024 Asian Curry Awards.

Competing against Michelin-starred venues in London's culinary epicentre—such as Benares in Mayfair and Amaya in Knightsbridge—Raval's triumph is a groundbreaking achievement for Newcastle Gateshead and the North of England.

The win challenges the long-standing dominance of London in the UK's fine dining scene, proving that world-class cuisine thrives beyond the capital. Kahani in Sloane Square won the Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant for London, while Raval emerged victorious in the “Outside London” category. Together, these wins highlight the breadth of talent across the UK’s Indian culinary landscape.

Indian food is woven into the fabric of British life, evolving from its humble beginnings with the opening of the first curry house in 1810 to becoming a national favourite. Today, millions of Britons visit curry houses weekly, recreate Indian dishes at home, or buy ready-made meals from supermarkets.

The UK’s curry industry generates over £7.5 billion annually and employs more than 100,000 people, making it a vital part of the nation’s economy and culture.

The Asian Curry Awards, dubbed the “Curry Oscars,” celebrate this enduring legacy while recognising the pioneers redefining Indian cuisine. This year, over 200 finalists spanning 14 Asian cuisines—including Thai, Japanese, and Vietnamese—were shortlisted through public voting, showcasing the UK's deep appreciation for Asian gastronomy.

“Winning this award isn’t just about Raval; it’s about showcasing the North of England’s growing reputation as a culinary destination,” said Nas Islam, Manager at Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar.

Yawar Khan, Chair of the Asian Catering Federation, praised the winners, saying: “The quality of competition this year was exceptional. Raval’s win underscores the incredible talent flourishing outside London. Kahani’s success in London and Raval’s in Newcastle together showcase the diversity and brilliance of Indian fine dining across the UK.”

Raval’s success is rooted in its relentless pursuit of excellence. The team’s dedication to blending authentic Indian flavours with contemporary British influences has earned them a place among the UK’s elite dining establishments. Signature dishes such as Lobster & Mango and Darjeeling Lamb Cutlets have become hallmarks of its innovative approach, while its exclusive seven-course tasting menu redefines what Indian cuisine can be.

In the weeks leading up to the awards, Raval’s chefs worked tirelessly, experimenting with spices and perfecting their signature dishes. “Our head chef even drew inspiration from his grandmother’s spice blend for the lamb cutlets,” Islam shared. “That personal connection to our roots while innovating for modern palates is what sets Raval apart.”
