A local choir based in Ashington is making big strides to be around for another 100 years!

Ashington & District Male Voice Choir, which celebrated its centenary back in 2016, is determined to ensure that male voice singing continues to be a legacy in the region. With a proactive recruitment drive, the Choir has already attracted five new members in 2024 after stabilizing numbers last year after Covid.

The town of Ashington will always be remembered as ‘The largest coal mining village in the world’. It is appropriate that the male voice choir performs a wide range of coal mining songs in its repertoire. But their programmes do not stop there as they also contain gospel, musical, popular, spiritual, traditional male voice and Tyneside numbers.

Thanks to the support of the Town Council, the Choir will now be able to take forward several initiatives to support the local community and members, as well as recruiting new singers. The Choir has been awarded a grant from the Town Council.

Kevin Lillie, the Choir’s public relations and stakeholder officer explains, ‘We are delighted to receive this grant from Ashington Town Council. It will help us to expand our participation in community events in the town, enrich our promotional material and repertoire.’

‘The Choir will also run a summer school for members to develop their basic understanding of musical terminology. They will also develop their skills to work with backing tracks, so they do not always have to be reliant on working with an accompanist. This should enable the Choir to be more engaging and flexible in the future when developing its forward programme. It should also assist with the Choir’s ongoing recruitment campaign.’
