New running club launches in Newcastle with first ever 5K challenge
and on Freeview 262 or Freely 565
DashPoint, a new app designed to make running more spontaneous and social, hosted its debut run last weekend at Little Aidens in Jesmond. Participants set off down Great North Road and around the Town Moor, with around 30 runners taking part.
Unlike traditional running clubs, DashPoint adds an element of surprise—runners receive a notification before a scheduled run, revealing a secret starting location. The app also rewards punctuality and participation with ‘DashPoints,’ which can be collected over time to unlock perks.

The launch comes amid a boom in running club participation. Strava’s Year In Sport: Trend Report 2024, which analysed data from over 135 million people worldwide, found a 59% increase in runners joining clubs last year. DashPoint aims to tap into this growing trend, offering a fresh and flexible way for runners to connect.
James Fergus, co-founder of DashPoint, said: “We’re really pleased with how our first run went. Running clubs are booming, but we wanted to create something different—something that adds a bit of spontaneity and fun. Seeing 30 runners embrace the mystery and take on a new route together was fantastic.
"This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to get more people involved.”DashPoint plans to roll out more events in the coming weeks, inviting runners of all abilities to get involved."
