There were three events in one when a Newcastle primary school held a Family Fun Day to celebrate the season.First the pupils at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School took part in their annual Sports Day, before joining friends and family on the school field for a picnic, and later enjoying the school’s annual Summer Fayre.

“All parents and family were invited to attend to support the sports day, then stay for the rest of the day for the family picnic, followed by the Fayre,” said Emily Barnes, who is PE Lead at the school and organised the sports morning.

“Children performed events in their house groups, followed by individual year group running races. House groups took part in a variety of group activities, such as the egg and spoon race, catch and pass the ball, pass the baton, and run in and out of the hula hoop.

“The parent race at sports day was also a highlight.”

Children from Reception to Year 6 participated in the sports and games, before relaxing over the picnic lunch.

“All teaching and support staff helped out with the picnic and Summer Fayre to make it run smoothly and make the day a huge success,” continued Miss Barnes.

“The picnic was a lovely event, where all families could enjoy being with their children on the school field along with other families. We had music playing while the children ate and enjoyed time with their families and friends during the picnic.”

The fun-filled day continued with the Summer Fayre, where staff, children and visitors enjoyed a range of stalls and activities, which included throwing wet sponges at a teacher.

All money raised went to St Catherine’s, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

“The children and staff love Family Fun Day, and it’s a real special day at St Catherine’s, where the children continuously let their lights shine,” added Miss Barnes.

“This event is a brilliant way to get the children across the school working together as a team and enjoying spending time with other children. The sports day shows our values as a school, where everyone is celebrated and sportsmanship is shown throughout the morning.

“It’s lovely to have the parents and guardians there for support and to see them enjoy this special day too.”
