Hide AdThanks to Newcastle Libraries, we have 13 amazing photographs chronicling what Tyneside was like 50 years ago.
We have a particular focus on the East End, including Byker and Heaton as they underwent significant change.
A mix of colour and black and white snaps, they show the city in a transitional period with the likes of the Central Motorway being built.

Hide AdIn April 1974, Tyne and Wear was officially created in local government reforms. Prior to this, Gateshead, Jarrow, Blaydon, South Shields and Sunderland were all apart of County Durham. Parts of North Tyneside were also moved from Northumberland to the new entity.
That month also saw the arrest of Newcastle City Council leader T Dan Smith for corruption.
