How and where to donate winter coats to the homeless across Newcastle this winter

As temperatures continue to fall this winter, times get harder for many people in need including those who are homeless or below the poverty line. However, there are groups across the region who are looking to ensure no one goes cold this winter through clothes donation drives.

There are plenty of ways regular people can help those in need such as donations of money or clothes, including winter jackets, and there are lots of places across Newcastle who are looking to to help.

One of the largest clothing collection charities in the UK is Clothes4Calais who are looking to ensure every refugee in the UK and France can stay warm this winter. The group have two pickup points across the region at the homes of volunteers in Gateshead and Jarrow.

Anyone looking to make a donation can contact those who run pick up points through the contact information on the charity’s website.

Newcastle’s local branch of the Salvation Army have a long history of supporting those in need, and that is no different this winter. The group are accepting donations to their shop on Clayton Street between 9:00am and 5:00pm between Monday and Saturday to raise funds to assist the homeless in addition to families and the elderly in need.

The Salvation Army also run a site on Brinkburn Street in Byker which accepts clothes, shoes, toys, bric a brac and small items of furniture. This second site is open between 9:00am and 5:00pm from Monday – Saturday.

A children’s clothes bank is also taking in items for 0-12 year olds. Tabitha’s Place is a site on Buddle Road in Elswick which specialises in helping local kids in need.

Those looking to give support where they can without the middle man can head down to Wearside where there is a Take One Leave One site near Mowbray Park in the city centre. The premise is simple – if you have something to give, leave it with volunteers and if you need something, you can take it from the same site between 10:00am and 1:00pm on Monday to Thursday.

A Newcastle TOLO was set up last year, but does not appear to be reopening this winter.
