On Tuesday, February 4, the doors to North East cocktail chain Mother Mercy’s newest site opened on Chillingham Road.
The hugely popular street has another bar on its roster, which is also Mother Mercy’s fifth site across the region.

The new site adds to Mother Mercy bars on the Cloth Market in the city centre, within Fenwick’s on Northumberland Street as well as Sheepfolds Stables in Sunderland and the Cafe Mercy site on Grey Street.
“Sunderland Sheepfolds gave us this confidence that we can build a site which isn’t two minutes away from something else” explains opening manager of the new site, Christian.
“We wanted to ensure that people who aren’t just in the city centre have somewhere to go to and I think the first option was quite an obvious one in Heaton” he adds.
“Our owner Neil lives through this way so he has a really good idea of what it’s like here and, from my experience, it’s very up and coming, there’s a lot of people who are really proud of the fact that you can go out for a great meal, have some beers. You can basically have a full night out, daytime on a Saturday experience two minutes from your doorstep.”

The site is situated between the hugely popular Flint Pizza and Neighbourhood Coffee shop in the heart of some top independent businesses which are popular with local residents.
Menu options come from a mix of old classics and new drinks from the Mother Mercy team, with the menu open to change based on what customers at the new venue are wanting.
“I think as we learn about what people want” explains Christian, we may want to rotate that and give an offering which keeps people coming back.

As for the future, there is already hope for further expansions. “There’s definitely a few little ideas running around” explains Christian. “This definitely won’t be the last new site opening.
“We like to make sure we do the stuff we have got very well at first, but I’d be very safe in saying this won’t be the last site opening for a while.”
