The best fish and chip shops from around the UK have been shortlisted ahead of this year’s national awards. Jason Manford will host the ceremony which is set to be held later this year.

Ten categories are up for grabs with a whole host of much loved chippies vying for the crown in their chosen categories. Despite ten categories, only one fish and chip shop from Newcastle has been nominated.

The awards, which have been running for more than three decades, are being hosted for the first time by the National Federation of Fish Frier (NFFF). NFFF president, Andrew Crook, told The Mirror: "We are really excited for the return of the National Fish and Chip Awards after we became the custodians of this prestigious event.

“With so many challenges currently for these small independent businesses it is fantastic to be able to highlight the great work the industry does, serving great value meals, providing quality employment and minimising the impact on the environment.

"Running a small business can feel that you are alone and often it feels that we don’t feature in Government’s plans for economic recovery but the calibre of these finalists show that we have a professional sector that is ready to play its part and with the right support to enable growth we can continue to play our vital role working within out local communities."

Which fish and chip shop has been nominated in Newcastle?

The internet went into a slight meltdown as Lewis Capaldi visited a fish and chip shop in Newcastle before his show at the Utilita Arena recently but, that is not the fish and chips shop that has been nominated.

The local chippy that received the nomination is Fisherman’s Bay, Whitley Bay. It is up for the category of ‘Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year’, but faces stern competition from a whole host of chippies from Yorkshire, Wales and elsewhere.

On their website, they say “With over 25 years experience in the fish and chip industry our menu has been carefully created to provide all the great food associated with life at the coast.

“All of our cod is sustainably sourced, we use local produce where we can ensure the freshest and most flavoursome dishes, for you to enjoy.”
