It marks the beginning of a year whose months are Moon cycles and is particularly celebrated in countries within East and Southeast Asia.

This year is the Year of the Tiger which means extra good luck for those born in the previous Tiger years of 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950 and 1938.

Whether or not you are a Tiger yourself, there's plenty of reason to recognise the festivities and many people in Newcastle will be eating a Chinese meal tonight to mark the occasion.
