As expected, Newcastle looked very different 100 years ago.
With hardly any cars on the roads, the city centre streets look extremely quiet in front of the old houses and shop fronts.
And yet, so much of it is instantly recognisable.
Landmarks such as the High Level Bridge and Swing Bridge immediately anchor us into these scenes from 1924. We’ve all stood in the places. The line of shops on the Groat Market still stand today and the public toilets which stood opposite have just been redeveloped into a cocktail bar after standing vacant for many years.
And yet, so much has been lost. For example the Long Stairs serve a completely different purpose today. Once crowded with homes and businesses, they’re quiet with a lot less building density.
Life was very different back then too.
Only six years after the conclusion of World War I and 15 before the start of World War II, many Geordies’ lives will have been significantly impacted by both conflicts.
Meanwhile, 1924 was the year Newcastle United beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the final of the FA Cup at the newly opened Wembley Stadium.
Here we have nine incredible photos showing what life was like some 100 years ago, thanks to Newcastle Libraries.
