Seven big-name celebrities who call the wonderful streets of Newcastle home

There’s something special in the air around Newcastle, any Geordie will tell you that, and you can see the Tyneside sparkle in the eye of some of the UK’s biggest celebrities.

From TV hosts to pop stars and football legends to actors, we’re capabale of all sorts up here in teh North East.

NewcastleWorld runs through seven of our most iconic Geordie celeb produces.

Ant and Dec

The nation’s favourite presenters, Ant and Dec are known for their northern charm and unique bond. The pair met on the set of Newcastle based children’s TV show, Byker Grove and have gone on to achieve huge success as presenters, with a career spanning over 30 years.

The duo show no signs of slowing down. Ant was born and raised in Fenham in the west-end of Newcastle, while Dec was born and raised by his Irish family, in Cruddas Park. Dec married his wife, Ali Astall in Elswick, Newcastle.

Cheryl

Former Girls Aloud member, Cheryl was born in Newcastle, and raised in the areas of Walker and Heaton.

Cheryl became known as the ‘nation’s sweetheart’ and reached dizzying heights of fame after launching her solo career. Prior to joining Girls Aloud, Cheryl used to perform in Metroland (a fairground situated in the Metrocentre).

Jimmy Nail

Multi-talented Jimmy Nail was born in Benton in Newcastle. He began his career acting in the TV series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet based on construction workers in Germany.

As well as acting, Jimmy is also a successful musician, film producer and television writer.

Charlie Hunnam

With many TV and fim roles to his name, such as Green Street, Queer as Folk and Sons of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam is a huge name in the entertainment industry.

Another alumni of Byker Grove, Charlie was born in Newcastle before moving to Cumbria aged 12.

Alan Shearer

Geordie football legend Alan Shearer was born in Gosforth.

He began his career playing for Southampton, but spent most of his football career playing as a striker for Newcastle United. He now works as a television pundit, for the BBC.

Sting

Last but not least, musician Sting (real name Gordon Sumner) who found fame by being the frontman, songwriter and bassist of band The Police. Born in Wallsend, Sting qualified as a teacher from Northumbria University, and taught at a school in Cramlington for two years.

Sting went on to launch a successful solo career after his success with The Police, winning 17 Grammy awards, and is one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time.
