St James Park has been the home of Newcastle United since the club’s formation and now stands as one of the mosy iconic stadiums in England.
Football had been played on the site as early as 1880 when local sides called it home, before becoming the home of Newcastle West End in 1886. Its lease was then bought by Newcastle East End when the clubs merged, creating the club as we know it today.
The site was previously used as grazing land near to the Town Moor while the ground also sits close to the site of the city’s gallows, leading to the naming of the Gallowgate end.

In addition to football, the stadium has also hosted rugby, including the second ever Rugby Leage test match in January 1909. It has also hosted gigs from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Sam Fender.
The current layout of the stadium was developed throughout the 1990s and 2000s, with the Leazes and Milburn stands which dominate the ground being given additional tiers of seating in 2000 that increased the capacity to over 50,000.
The current capacity of St James Park stands at 52,305.
