17 captivating Tynemouth pictures- some which go back more than 100 years

Let's take a look back at Tynemouth's past through these 17 photographs.

Today we have a focus on Tynemouth with 17 incredible photos chronicling the coastal town's past.

The photographs span over one hundred years showing just how much has changed since the 19th Century.

For one, Tynemouth Plaza can be seen in the background of many of the pictures. Opened in 1878 to overlook Longsands, the building was destroyed in a fire in 1996.

It's also possible to spot some old bathing machines to allow for 'respectable' sea swimming between the 18th and early 20th Century.

So have a gander through the historic photos provided by Newcastle Libraries and let us know what you recognise.
