17 nostalgic Newcastle pictures to take you back to 1995 and 1996

What can you remember about life in Newcastle in the mid-90s?

In 1995 Newcastle looked very different with large parts of the city boarded up. While the streets are familiar, facades were a bit worse for wear.

Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League with Newcastle United sitting in sixth. The following season the Magpies finished in second place, just four points behind Manchester United.

1996 was the summer of the Euros, hosted on home soil for the first time. It was another year of heartbreak with England losing to Germany on penalties in the semi-finals. Germany went on to win the competition.

In July of that year, Alan Shearer became the most expensive footballer in the world- moving from Blackburn to his boyhood club Newcastle for £15m.

Although recognisable, Newcastle was a very different place 30 years ago. So here are 17 pictures showing what life was like.
