19 retro photos of Dean Street and the Side in Newcastle through the decades

Here we have 19 amazing photographs showing Dean Street and the Side's history.

Built along the dene of the Lort Burn river, when Dean Street was completed by architect David Stephenson in 1787 it was linked to the old Tyne Bridge and became one of Newcastle’s principal streets. Side is a medieval street connected to the bottom of Dene Street. It's name derives from its location on the side of a hill. It was very different in the past when the lower part of the street was divided by the Lort Burn, which was later built over in 1696

Admiral Lord Collingwood was born in the Side, Newcastle on 26th September 1748. Today, both are part of Newcastle's city centre hub of restaurants, bars and shops. But how much has changed over the decades?

Take a look and let us know.
