40 year old man arrested after Bigg Market "disturbance" leaving another seriously injured

Emergency services found a man with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

Part of Newcastle's City Centre remains closed today after an overnight incident on one of the city's major nightlife hotspots.

The Bigg Market remains under police cordon after a man was seriously injured in the early hours of Friday, December 29.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 2.10am today (Friday), police received a report of a disturbance between two people outside of a premises on Grainger Street in Newcastle.

“Emergency services attended the scene and found a man with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article. The man – in his 20s – was taken to hospital for treatment and remains there in a stable condition."

“An investigation was launched to establish the full circumstances and locate those involved.

“A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody at this time.

“Officers remain in the area to offer reassurance and carry out enquiries. A cordon is currently in place on High Bridge.

“While the investigation is at an early stage, officers believe those involved are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public.
