If you have already been into Newcastle’s city centre for the Fenwicks Window, the Christmas Market and a bit of Christmas shopping, it may be time to look elsewhere for things to do in and around the city.
With two weeks of family and friends starting soon for many as schools break up for the Christmas and New Year holiday, we all need a bit of time out the house mixed with some fresh air and some crisp conditions.
Luckily for us, we have some of the best stretches of coastline in the country right on our doorstep, so come with us as we take a road trip to see some of the best coastal day trips on North Tyneside and Northumberland this Christmastime.

1. Berwick Upon Tweed
One of the northernmost towns before Northumberland meets Scotland, Berwick Upon Tweed is ideal for a family day out. Full of lovely independent shops and cafes, the area also boasts some stunning riverside walks to get away from it all. | Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images

2. Tynemouth
Closer to home, Tynemouth is a coastal favourite for many across the North East in the summer, but taking a trip out on the metro during the colder months is just as rewarding - but wrap up warm, the wind can hit you hard! | Tom Stoddart/Getty Images

3. Bamburgh
If you can stop the wind blowing sand into your face, Bamburgh is a perfect place to head this winter. On clear days the site around the iconic castle offers stunning sunrises and sunsets while the nearby town is ideal for a coffee to warm yourself up. | Dan Kitwood/Getty Images Photo: Dan Kitwood

4. Seahouses
Quiet beaches, plenty of chances to watch waves crashing against harbour walls and plenty of cafes and pubs for lunches, Seahouses might be an ideal afternoon away from the beaten track. A coastal walk south to Beadnell is a good way to keep the legs going too. | National World Photo: JPI
