Here we have 23 incredible photos showing life in Newcastle in 1989.
They paint a bright picture of the North East 35 years ago.
The year saw Newcastle United relegated to the second division alongside Middlesbrough. With Sunderland already in the second tier it meant there was no North East representation in the nation’s top division.
The year also saw a successful start on CBBC for Byker Grove, which would quickly become a childhood favourite for many people across the country. The show, which was actually filmed in Benwell rather than Byker, was credited as one of the key reasons behind the rise of Ant and Dec. The drama ran until 2006. Take a look through these nostalgic photos and see how many sights you can remember.
