American chicken giants Popeyes to open Gateshead store - first three customers get free chicken all year

US fried chicken giant Popeyes has announced its first-ever store in the North East as a UK expansion continues.

Following openings in Romford, Chelmsford and Stratford, Gateshead is next on the list for the chain.

Thousands of poultry fans queued to get a taste of the American fast food staple at previous city openings, and that's expected once again when Popeyes opens its doors at the Metrocentre on Saturday, August 20.

The store's menu will include its classics such as Popeyes' Southern biscuits and gravy, as well as 12-hour marinated Chicken Sandwich.

The outlet will open at 9 am on August 20 with a live New Orleans-style party from 11 am - the first 50 customers will also be given a free Chicken Sandwich and merchandise.

On top of that, the first three people in the queue will win free Chicken Sandwichers for the next year.

Popeyes UK Chief Operating Officer Neil Williamson, who happens to be a Geordie, said: “I am super excited to be expanding the Popeyes brand into the North East. Most global brands that come across to the UK are keen to take over the South first and often don’t consider the North until years later, which is why we always felt it was important to establish Popeyes up North in the early stages of our UK expansion.

"The North East is an incredible part of the UK with much in common with the brand’s New Orleans roots… fierce local pride; a rich history; appreciation for a good party and above all a big heart. I believe that our legendary menu and Southern hospitality will really win the hearts and tastebuds of the North East.”

Popeyes at the Metrocentre is located on the ground floor of the Yellow Mall Qube and will seat up to 98 people with the following opening hours: Monday – Friday 10:30 am – 9 pm, Saturday 10:30 am – 7 pm and Sunday 11 am – 5 pm.
