‘Appalling’: Police slam hammer-wielding Subway robbers in Battle Hill

The Subway shop in Wallsend was reportedly targetted by robbers last Wednesday - police have now called for eye-witnesses.

Northumbria Police has slammed an "appalling offence" that saw hammer-wielding robbers target the Subway in Battle Hill, Wallsend.

Officers investigating the robbery have now appealed for witnesses to come forward.

At about 5:05 pm on Wednesday, January 18 officers received a report of a robbery at the shop on Battle Hill Drive.

It was reported that a number of offenders entered the premises and threatened two staff members with a hammer, before stealing the till and making off on foot. Thankfully neither of the staff members were physically injured but they were left shaken by the incident.

A full investigation has been launched into the robbery and officers are now asking anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Henderson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an appalling offence and we are determined to trace those responsible and bring them to justice. I would like to thank the staff members who’ve shown great bravery ever since the incident.

“This criminality will not be tolerated and I am asking the public to come forward and assist our investigation. A number of enquiries have been carried out over the last week following this incident. If you saw anything suspicious in the area, please let us know. Your information could prove crucial to our enquiries.”
