Met Office gives sudden thunderstorm weather warning for Newcastle with travel disruption predicted

The Met Office has released a last-minute weather warning for Newcastle and the North East on Monday with thunderstorms imminent.

The weather experts announced a yellow weather warning for North East England at 10:14 am on Monday, May 16.

The warning for thunderstorms will remain in place from 1 pm on Monday until 10 pm this evening.

The Met Office has told Geordies to expect that "scattered thunderstorms will develop Monday afternoon bringing some disruption to travel in places".

The announcement continued: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is likely.

"A chance of some flooding of homes and businesses or some damage to a few buildings or structures from lightning strikes."

Rain of up to 20 mm is expected in places with a risk of hail and thunder also on the cards.

It's a sea change in weather conditions after a balmy weekend on Tyneside with temperatures reaching above 20 degrees Celcius.

Despite the incoming thunderstorms, temperatures for the rest of today will remain around a comfortable 10 - 13 degrees.
