‘Canine-mad’ PR company, Harvey & Hugo,  who are named after owner Charlotte Nichols’ two dogs, have launched a poll to celebrate the day, but also to find which breeds are the most loved in the North East.

In 2015, a YouGov poll reported that labrador’s are Britain’s most popular breed, with pit bulls and chihuahua towards the end of the list.

However, Nichol’s hopes to find a new winner of best dog breed, and to find which one is most popular in our local area.

She said: “Since that poll almost a decade ago, dog ownership has soared and during lockdown alone, three million households bought a dog.

“Dogs are firmly at the heart of our business, much like they are part of millions of people’s lives. We see dogs as part of our family.

“We’ve always been a nation of dog lovers, and the North East is no different – we absolutely adore our pets in this region.

“So it will be fascinating to see which breed is crowned top dog ahead of International Dog Day this year, particularly when some of the breeds that have previously been voted to be among the least popular are actually incredibly popular.”

To vote in Harvey & Hugo’s dog breed poll, please fill out their survey here. The closing date of the survey is on Wednesday, September 6, with the results announced shortly after.
