The Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Pat Hay and Mrs Jean Copp, visited the school and joined the head boy and girl to plant a tree.

The Mayor said: “It is inspirational to see the enthusiasm and concern these young people have for the planet.”

“They care very much for the environment and it is wonderful to see how keen they have been to learn about COP26.”

The pupils have been taught about pollution and the effects of global warming on countries around the world, discussing serious problems for future generations like deforestation and changes in the weather.

Headteacher Scott Brown said: “The tree planting with the Mayor was symbolic of our children’s efforts to make a positive difference to the environment for their future and that of the planet.”

“Pupils also created a ‘forest of promises’ tree display. This features promises written on leaves highlighting the actions they promise to undertake to help the planet. On the reverse side, they wrote what they would like the world leaders to pledge to do.”

He added: “The commitment of these young people to do their bit for the environment has been truly inspiring. By taking small steps as individuals they understand how that can lead to big changes for the planet.”
