Seven vehicles have been seized as part of a day of action, cracking down on motorcycle-related criminality and anti-social behaviour.

On Sunday, Northumbria Police officers targeted areas across Gateshead such as Waverley Road in Harlow Green and Fewster Square in Leam Lane, following reports from concerned residents.

They were joined by officers from the Forces Motorcycle Unit, Op Dragoon team and a drone unit to provide eyes from the sky.

Across the day - a suspected stolen moped and a stolen scooter were seized - along with a motorbike, another scooter and three cars - all which were found to be uninsured.

Two arrests were made – a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of motor vehicle theft and a 29-year-old man for driving under the influence of drugs. Both were released on bail.

Four people were summoned to court for having no insurance and two stop and searches for drugs were carried out.

Chief Inspector Thomas Hart, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was the biggest targeted day of action in Gateshead utilising the drones, police motorbikes, Op Dragoon, Neighbourhood Officers and Special Constables. We would like to thank our team and the efforts of our partners so far.

“It is brilliant to see the positive impact which Operation Capio has already had in Gateshead, as we know this type of antisocial behaviour and criminality can cause misery for our communities.

“While we are pleased to see encouraging results such as these, we know our work is far from over.

“Anti-social riders should expect to be arrested and have their vehicles seized and potentially crushed.”

“Please help us to help you by continuing to be our eyes and ears out in the community, and by telling us about your concerns via our website or anonymously via Crimestoppers.

“If you see something suspicious, please report it to police at the earliest opportunity and share as much detail as possible to help us identify those involved.”

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth, said: “I was out at the weekend to see Northumbria Police and partners pulling out all the stops to seize bikes and arrest individuals believed to be involved in motorbike crime and disorder. I hope this heightened activity acts as a warning to those responsible and also reassures local people that we are listening and officers are taking tough action in response to concerns - I will make sure this continues.”
