Estrella Damm top 50 gastropubs 2023: Newcastle pub among named among best in UK

As Estrella Damm releases its fourteenth list of the top 50 best gastropubs in the UK in 2023, one pub in Newcastle has makes the cut. The list by the Spanish beer brand sees five new entries, and three gastropubs re-enter the list.

Gastropubs, a term first coined in the 1990’s, means an establishment that focuses on restaurant-worthy, high quality food while still remaining a pub. Suffolk’s The Unruly Pig is currently ranked as the best place for pub grub in the country as this year’s top 50 are announced.

Top 50 Gastropubs publisher, Chris Lowe, said: “After a tough few years for the hospitality industry, we are thrilled to see such a strong list of contenders this year. The Top 50 Gastropubs provides a platform for food-lovers to explore the very best offerings across the UK.”

As the only pub in Newcastle to be named, The Broad Chare makes the top 50 best in the country for proper food grub. It first made the list in 2022, retaining its spot on the list for this year as well.

The Broad Chare describes itself as a pub that “offers all the best bits of a traditional ale-house” and promises well-kept beer, honest food, friendly company and good cheer  with a fresh, modern touch. In its own words it is: “Nothing fancy, nothing fussy, just genuine warmth and an open-hearted welcome. A proper pub.”
