A brand-new sports organisation has been launched in the North East aimed at increasing physical activity among young children.
Mini Athletics Newcastle has been founded by Australian-born former professional athlete Taylor Mesiti, whose aim is to encourage children under the age of 8-years-old to participate in physical exercise.

“You can join an athletics club at the age of 8, but it’s quite rare they will accept you as you’re not able to compete.
“I found a franchise down South that offered athletics to young children, and I instantly fell in love with the idea, so I got involved and brought it up to the North East.”
Taylor decided to launch Mini Athletics Newcastle in order to give young children a first introduction into sport.

“We get children excited about moving their bodies by being active, making friends, growing in confidence and building athleticism within themselves.
“There are a whole range of benefits of doing athletics as a youngster, from the social side to the physical side, as well as building confidence and releasing energy.”
Mini Athletics Newcastle ensures that the children enjoy the sessions, by making them fun, energetic and imaginative.

Speaking on the importance of youngsters engaging in physical activity, Taylor said: “The younger you can get involved in sports can help to shape your future.
“If you have a great experience with sports when you’re young, you are more inclined to take that with you and be active later in life.
“This is important for not only physical health but also emotional health.”
