Many Newcastle United fans will look back at Vurnon Anita’s time at the club with mixed emotions.

The midfielder and fullback is a reminder of the painful Mike Ashley years which was epitomised by the Toon’s relegation at the end of the 2015-16 season. Antia was also part of the team who won promotion back to the Premier League the following season before leaving to play at Leeds in 2017.

Now playing in Saudi for First-Division side Al-Orobah, the footballer is now paving a career adjacent to the beautiful game.

Going by the name Vurnon ‘JR’ Anita, the 34-year-old has launched a rap music career. His first single was released in 2021 and now his social media is dedicated to promoting his tunes and celebrating his football wins.

But where did his passion for music come from? Well, according to his Spotify bio, he’s always had a passion for music and something Anita may focus on more after he retires.

‘Vurnon Anita (JR) Born on the beautiful island Curaçao his love for music began early in his childhood. His father introduced him to Latin pop music,’ says his bio.

‘His love for music began in his childhood. But it was the discovery of rap music that truly touched him. In 2010 he recorded his first song with Priester, Ryan Babel and Leroy Fer. His love for music always played a big role in his life but it never got that serious until now… Now, JR wants to really work on his passion and tell his story, thru his music. His first release named “Fidem” is one of the many more songs to come. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned.’
