Current 5,000m World Champion Obiri finished in one hour seven minutes 42 seconds to pip Scotland’s Eilish McColgan.

The historic half-marathon began with the Red Arrows flying past over the Tyne Bridge to mark the 40th edition of the race.

The race was cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The course redesigned for 2021, with the runners crossing the Tyne Bridge twice.

Britain’s Sean Frame, 24, won the men’s wheelchair title with fellow Briton and six-time winner Shelly Woods, 35, winning the women’s.

Yorkshire born, Marc Scott, represented Great Britain in the 5,000m and 10,000m at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Scott finished nine seconds ahead of Kenya’a Edward Cheserek and Galen Rupp, who took second and third place respectively.

It’s the first time since 2013 the men’s race hasn’t been won by four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah, who was absent from this year’s race.
