I was the victim of a hate crime and found a new joy in MMA fighting

A man who was the victim of a hate crime earlier in life has taken up MMA, and will be taking part in a charity fight for firefighters in 2025.

Tom Gallagher, who was born in Leeds but has called Newcastle home for five years, will be taking to the ring in March to raise money for The Firefighters Charity, a cause close to his heart.

“I’m only five foot four” he explains. “People always expect to be able to walk all over me.

“I’ve been the victim of homophobic assault. I’ve had three lodgers who took advantage, one was a boxer. He could have done some serious damage.

“I don’t really go out much any more.”

This led to other issues within Gallagher’s life: “That all came to an end and the friends I had weren’t very good. I lost everything so I was better for starting all over again.

“I’m doing a programming course and started learning Thai Boxing.”

He also goes to a faith school, and it was here where his new life truly began.

“The guy who runs the Jesus class is such a kind lovely guy. I mentioned my Thai boxing and he goes to Northern Kings gym, which is where I go.

“I’ve always been looking for good, loyal friends and when you go Thai boxing, the guys are so welcoming and kind.

I’m all new to boxing and defence, but the guys are so nice, they took me in, told me where I’m going wrong and gave me tips.

“It’s a really awesome hobby, to get active and meet people in the community.”

And now Tom feels as though it is his turn to help others. He has signed up for a charity MMA fight next year in Newcastle with the hope of raising money for a firefighters charity.

“We had a house fire when I was a child and they saved my life. I’ve never forgotten it.

“I’ve never given back and I’ve met firefighters over the years and they’re warriors and really kind guys.

“The Firefighters Charity is very underfunded, no one really knows about them and I want to spread the word and promote all the good work they do.”

The fight will take place in March with a fundraiser now live for the fight. It will take place in Tom’s adopted home of Newcastle.

“It’s the kindest place in the world” he explains. There’s some amazing parts of Newcastle.”

It is these local residents who helped Tom find his new love. “Northern Kings is an awesome gym. The staff are great trainers - so kind and friendly.

“I feel much more confident and willing to do stuff and meet people.

“You’re going out, meeting new people and you’re pushing yourself. It’s a total win-win.”

Fundraising for Tom’s fight is live now, and can be found through his JustGiving link.
