"I'd love to see him in there" - Newcastle United fan favourite gives his thoughts on winger's England game time

England have qualified for the quarter finals, but plenty of fans are still struggling to see the performances they expect from Gareth Southgate’s squad.

It took a late equaliser and an extra time winner, but England are one of the final eight teams in Euro 2024 this summer.

On Sunday evening hundreds of fans flocked to Newcastle city centre to watch the round of 16 fixture against Slovakia which saw goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane send the Three Lions on to the next round.

Westgate Road music venue NX has been hosting a fanzone throughout the tournament and showing each England game on a big screen with live music on offer to build the pre-match experience.

The venue has also been welcoming special guests to offer their views on performances, with former Newcastle striker Micky Quinn taking on the role after the Slovakia fixture.

“The good news is, we got through and we’re in the next round” said the former striker, who can now be heard on TalkSport.

“I backed us against [Slovakia], but they made hard work of it. The belief has got to come now after winning that.

“By the way, the next England flag should just read ‘Get Gordon On’.

“They’re in the quarter finals of a major competition - and they haven’t even played well yet!” he added.

“I just can’t believe the luck they’ve had to get through the group stages and today. It was a touch of brilliance from Bellingham.

“Southgate has to start a system where they’re getting forward and getting more attacking.

“Southgate has been bailed out by Kane and Bellingham, he’s got more jam than Hartley’s!

“We can breathe a huge sigh of relief we’ve got to this stage and we’re more than capable of beating Switzerland. We know that.”

When talking about changes needed for the remainder of England’s campaign in Germany, the 62 year old added: “I’d love to see [Anothony Gordon] in there, because I think the team, as it is, lacks pace.

“Foden on the left hand side just checks in, what Gordon can do is turn and get them on the back foot.

“I think that’s what England are lacking, players who can get after teams, get them on the back foot, create chances and score goals. That England team is capable of scoring four or five goals a game, they just need to get their creative juices flowing.”

The NX fanzone is set to return on Saturday for England’s quarter final against Switzerland.
