King Charles III’s coronation set to be shown on a big screen in Newcastle city centre

Many exciting activities are taking place across Newcastle for King Charles III’s coronation - including the opportunity to watch the historic event on a big screen.

The Coronation of King Charles III will be broadcast for free on a big screen in Times Square on Saturday, May 6, from 9.30am until 4pm.

The big screen is part of a number of activities taking place in Newcastle to mark the occasion, with street parties and community events also being held.

On May 6, the ceremony, which is held at Westminster Abbey, will start at 11am after the Royal Family arrives in procession from Buckingham Palace.

Following the service, King Charles will return to the palace, where he will be joined on the balcony by other senior royals.

To mark the event, a Coronation Concert will be a held at Windsor Castle on Sunday, May 7.

Members of the public in Newcastle can again watch the event for free in Times Square on the big screen from 8pm.

Acts such as Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are set to perform, alongside community choirs and singers from across the UK.

Michelle Percy, Director of Place at Newcastle City Council, said: “The King’s coronation promises to be a truly historic event.

“We know there is a huge affection for the royal family and we have had the honour of welcoming King Charles to the city on many occasions throughout the years.

“We are absolutely delighted to be broadcasting the Coronation ceremony in Times Square, alongside lots of other exciting events which are being held across the city.

“The bank holiday weekend will be a fantastic opportunity for our communities to come together to celebrate the momentous occasion.”

Elsewhere in the city, landmarks including the Civic Centre and the Tyne Bridge will be illuminated red, white and blue.

Residents will receiving sweet treats as part of Newcastle City Council’s Meals at Home servic and libraries will be holding coffee mornings and children’s craft sessions.

The council has confirmed that the coronation will also be broadcast at the City and Fenham libraries.

Ahead of the bank holiday weekend for the coronation, pupils across the city will also enjoy coronation-themed menus at schools.
