Man in custody after being arrested at North Tyneside lighthouse with 'imitation firearm'

Police have arrested a man after he was caught carrying an imitation firearm in North Tyneside.

Police were called to a Northumberland town on Wednesday morning following reports of suspicious activity.

The man, who started his journey in Ashington, then travelled to the coast where he was arrested.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11.20am today (Wednesday), we received multiple reports of suspicious activity in the Ashington area.

"It was reported that a male travelling in a vehicle was believed to be in possession of a firearm.

"A short time later, the man – aged in his 60s - was located in the area of St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

"He was found in possession of an imitation firearm and arrested.

"He remains in custody at this time."
