NE1’s Screen on the Green returns to Newcastle for the summer

NE1’s popular ‘Screen on the Green’ is making its return to Newcastle city centre this summer.

The free open-air move theatre will take up its usual residence in Old Eldon Square from July 3 until September 3.

The popular event was ranked as number two in The Times’ Guide to the Top 10 free family days out in the UK in 2022.

NE1’s Screen on the Green marks the start of the organisation’s Summer in the City programme, with the screen set show the Wimbledon tennis championships when it returns.

The big screen will be accompanied by NE1 deckchairs, picnic tables and other colourful seating.

Rachel Barlow, Marketing and Events Manager at NE, has promised that there will be something for everyone at the Screen on the Green this summer.

She said: “We have an amazing Summer in the City schedule planned for this year, starting with our ever-popular, Screen on the Green.

“From sporting action to movie blockbusters – we have it all.

“We want everyone to enjoy what’s on offer, so we’ve added events into the schedule that will cater for even our youngest visitors with Toddler Takeovers and our new drop-in library and read-along sessions with Newcastle Libraries.

“Kids can also let off some steam and express their creativity with Play Rebellion when it returns to Old Eldon Square this summer so here’s hoping the weather is kind and we can all enjoy Newcastle and NE1’s free, open-air activities.”

Tennis won’t be the only sport shown on the big screen this summer, as from August 20, NE1 will be showing the Women’s World Cup final at 11am.

It follows the success from last year when the screen showcased the Women’s European Championships.

Movies will also be returning to the big screen in time for the school holidays starting on Monday, July 24, and will run through until September 15.

There will be 15 free films each week, with two films broadcast each day throughout the holidays - the first at 12pm and then at 3pm.

Thursdays will also be devoted to blockbuster screenings, with an additional film shown in the evening at 6pm.

Some of the films scheduled to be shown this year include Disney’s Encanto, Avatar: The Way of Water, Lightyear, Top Gun Maverick, and more.

The Screen on the Green will also feautre ‘Toddler Takeovers’ on Tuesdays, with Seven Stories set to host a weekly event at 10.30am every Tuesday, starting on July 25.

The interactive and immersive sessions will be designed for toddlers and young children, with a toddler-friendly short film, accompanied by a Seven Stories story-teller reading the book as an accompaniment.
