Newcastle fire: Two remain in hospital following suspected arson attack in Westerhope

Two people remain in hospital following a fire at a commercial property in Westerhope to the west of Newcastle this week with police also confirming officers are treating the incident as suspected arson.

Roads were closed in Westerhope area on the morning of Tuesday, May 23 after reports of a fire with four people being treated at hospital. Two were discharged on the same day.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 10.05am on Tuesday we were alerted to a report of a fire at a premises on Stamfordham Road, Newcastle.

“Officers and emergency services attended the scene and four people were taken to hospital.

“Two people were discharged on Tuesday, while two remain in hospital for treatment.

“An investigation into the cause of the fire is on-going and at this time officers are treating it as suspected arson.

“While our investigation is at an early stage, we do believe all those involved are known to each other and there is no threat to the wider public.

“Officers remain in the area, carrying out door-to -door enquiries and offering reassurance to residents. Anyone with any concerns is urged to speak to officers.

“We would like to thank the public for their continued support and cooperation and would ask people not to speculate on details of the investigation, especially online.

“Officers have identified everyone they believe to be involved, however enquiries are on-going and anyone with any CCTV footage or information is asked to dial 101 or report via our website’s ‘Tell us Something’ function, quoting log NP-20230523-0301.”
