Newcastle freshers: The biggest names and events for Newcastle and Northumbria University freshers weeks

Exams are over, results are in and now another excited group of young people are preparing for at least three years of further education at the Newcastle and Northumbria universities.

Moving from home life to university can be a huge step in life, with universities and students’ unions doing their best to welcome new faces to the city.

And freshers’ week is among the best ways to introduce students to university life.

What is freshers’ week?

Used as a welcome period for students to get to know their new city, university, flatmates and coursemates, freshers’ week is the best chance students have to get used to the university lifestyle. This includes club nights and daytime events set up by student unions, as well as course leaders giving a further glimpse of what to expect over the next three years.

When is freshers’ week in Newcastle?

Newcastle University and Northumbria University have two different freshers weeks in 2022, with Newcastle’s falling between Sunday, September 17 and Friday, September 22 and Northumbria’s coming a week later, between Monday, September 25 and Saturday, September 30.

What is happening for students in Newcastle for freshers week in 2023?

Newcastle University Students Union are kicking off freshers with a bang as they welcome students to the North East with a huge launch party.

The union has confirmed world famous DJ Sigala will be headlining the opening night at the Students Union Bar on campus on Sunday, September 17.

The same venue will be hosting a night of tribute acts just 24 hours later when Scam Fender and The Kopycat Killers play back to back sets.

A quiz night will follow on the Tuesday before two sessions of Bingo Revolution takes over the site on Wednesday, September 20.

Live band karaoke brings the week of nightlife to a close, although the union have also organised a huge amount of daytime events for new students.

Northumbria University also has its fair share of impressive events going on throughout the first week of the academic year.

The union there are also welcoming Bingo Revolution to their site as well as a huge two hour drag extravaganza, various freshers fayres and a night of Bollywood performances late into the night on the Thursday of their freshers week.

Northumbria students also have a huge array of daytime options throughout the week.
