Heavy rain in Newcastle on Tuesday morning caused widespread disruption across the city.

The Met Office had warned that "heavy and persistent rain is likely to lead to disruption to transport" and that proved to be the case.

Dramatic rainstorms hit Newcastle from early on Tuesday morning, and despite a brief respite at lunchtime, are expected to return later in the day.

After a relatively dry September, the sudden heavy rain has caused flooding across Tyneside with transport greatly affected.

The A1058 Coast Road Eastbound was closed as flooding filled the carriageway under the Chillingham Road roundabout.

By midday the road had been cleared and reopened as rains eased and traffic once again resumed.

However, the slip road remained closed with services working on a puddle posing problems for cars.

With the rain at its worst, the Tyne and Wear Metro was forced to close for large parts of the service.

Trains weren’t running between Haymarket to South Gosforth and Jarrow to South Shields.

Those services have now resumed, with the only disruption on the Metrobetween South Gosforth to Kingston Park.

Stagecoach bus services 6, 7, 8 and the x47 are accepting Metro tickets in the affected area.

Flooding on the roads has inevitably had a knock on effect onto bus services too.

Stagecoach North East has reported “long delays to all services and diversions” throughout the day.
