The incident is said to have occurred overnight in the Italian city.

Newcastle United have issued a statement following reports of a fan being stabbed in Milan ahead of the Magpies’ Champions League fixture against AC Milan.

Following reports and images circulating online throughout the morning of Tuesday, September 19, a club spokesperson said: “We are deeply concerned by reports that a supporter was seriously assaulted in Milan on Monday evening and we are liaising with local authorities to understand the circumstances.

“Our thoughts are with the supporter and their family and we hope for a full and speedy recovery.”

The fixture will be the club’s first in the Champions League in two decades and is the first trip of a European campaign which will see fans travel to Dortmund in Germany and Paris as well as Milan.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of reports of a Newcastle United supporter being seriously assaulted in Milan yesterday evening. We can confirm we are supporting authorities in Italy.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have also spoken on the incident, saying: “We were not approached for consular assistance in this case, but our staff stand ready to support British Nationals overseas 24/7.”
