A superfan of Newcastle United decided to go against usual wedding traditions as he wore a team shirt and jeans when tying the knot.

61-year-old William ‘Billy’ Richardson married his long-term partner Kim at Durham Registry Office, Aykley Heads, and the couple decided to do things a little differently, as they both donned black and white, paying homage to their favourite football team.

While Billy wore a brand-new 2023/24 season Newcastle United shirt, his bride donned a beautiful white dress with a black flower pattern.

As reported by Deadline News, Billy’s new wife Kim said: “We’ve both been married before, and we didn’t want the pomp and fuss of a big do.

“Billy and I just wanted to do things in a way we would both be comfortable, especially with our health issues.”

She continued: “We agreed on no suits or big wedding dresses, so it became the theme of football shirts and jeans, and the women could either wear the same or dress up.

“We had two Manchester United supporters, and a Sunderland supporter as part of our family guests, and then it turned out that the lady conducting the wedding was also a Sunderland supporter – it was great.”

Durham County Council shared two images of the couple on their wedding day, to their social media page.

They captioned the post: “Congratulations to Kim and Billy, who married at Aykley Heads House last week. Anne, our Superintendent Registrar conducted the ceremony and registrar Lesley, completed the paperwork.

“Billy is an avid Newcastle supporter, so the dress code was ‘no suits allowed, Newcastle top and jeans only way to get married’. Little did he know...he was being married by a Sunderland supporter.”
