The largest travelling funfair in Europe is opening in Newcastle this weekend and after a wet couple of weeks, conditions are set to be improving.

That’s right, it’s that time of year again. The famous Hoppings funfair is returning to the North East this weekend for a couple of days of family fun on the Town Moor, but will the weather hold up to make it a memorable few days?

The start of this summer has seen fairly mild temperatures, but has also been far wetter than usual.

What is the Met Office weather forecast for Newcastle this weekend?

Luckily for anyone with plans this weekend, the Met Office is currently predicting much better weather than we have seen so far in June.

On Friday, June 21 when the fair opens the Met Office are predicting dry conditions with midday highs of 20°C lasting from midday until around 6pm with conditions only falling to 16°C by midnight.

This will be matched by a mix of overcast and clear skies, getting cloudier into the evening.

Saturday will see much of the same, starting clear and becoming more cloudy as the morning continues. Highs of 18°C will run from just before midday until sunset.

The final day of the weekend promises similar conditions with temperatures once again hitting 20°C in the afternoon with the sun trying to burst through cloud clover throughout the afternoon.

The funfair continues into next week with the medium range forecast from the Met Office predicting more of the same, although skies may be clearer heading into next week.

The weather service claims we should see “predominantly fine and settled through the period and for much of the country turning much warmer than we have seen in recent weeks. At first some thicker cloud could bring some outbreaks of mostly light rain, this mainly affecting western, especially northwestern areas.

“However for most it will be dry throughout, and likely to turn increasingly warm as we move into next week.”

Is there a high pollen count in Newcastle?

The Met Office are also warning of a high pollen count over the coming days. A very high pollen warning is in place from Thursday, June 20 until the end of the weekend. This warning is in place across the North East but will be especially bad in open, grassy areas such as the Town Moor.

High levels of UV light are also expected over the weekend with a peak just after midday on Friday. The Met Office UV exposure index has given the North East a score of 7 out of 11, meaning it is advised to seek shade during midday hours, cover up and wear sun cream.

When is The Hoppings open in Newcastle?

Gates for the event open at 1pm on Friday and close at 11pm. The funfair will remain in the city between Friday, June 21 and Sunday, June 30.

Weekend hours remain as 1pm until 11pm while midweek hours are between 2pm and 11pm.
