October has almost arrived in Newcastle and it's not long until spooky season hits Tyneside - which means pumpkin patches nearby are primed and ready.

From Northumberland to Durham, Newcastle is well served by farms growing pumpkins within driving distance.

As well as letting customers march through the fields and ponder over which is the plumpest pumpkin, many also put on Halloween themed activities included spooky mazes and costume competitions.

Below are six of the top picks to get your pumpkin picking fill across the North East.

Brocksbushes

Brocksbushes Farm, Northumberland NE43 7UB

Driving time from Newcastle: 25 minutes

Brocksbushes in Corbridge is ready and raring to go for pumpkin-picking season.

The large farm has confirmed its dates for 2022 with the pumpkin patches opening to the public on Saturday, October 1. The full list of open days includes Sunday, October 2, the weekend of October 8 and 9 and then daily from October 15 to October 19.

Last year the farm sold out completely, so it's essential to book a slot to come and choose your pumpkin. Entry is £2 per person and the price of the pumpkin depends on its size.

Down at the Farm

Stoneygate Lane, Houghton le Spring DH5 8JG

Driving time from Newcastle: 25 minutes

Down at the Farm is known for being an animal farm, but turns into a spooky pumpkin-picking hotspot just before Halloween.

Organisers have confirmed their plans for this year's festivities with a picking week running from Saturday, October 22 until Sunday, October 30.

It's a great one for the kids with a haunted barn, ghost train, trick or treat, scarecrow making sessions and even quad biking going on.

Admission for pumpkin picking can be reserved online and costs £7.95 for adults and children, with the kid's ticket coming with a barrel ride included. Pumpkin prices are added later on.

Adventure Valley

Union Hall Farm, Durham DH1 5SG

Driving time from Newcastle: 35 minutes

The price of your pumpkin is included in the £14.25 booking fee at Adventure Valley.

The farm is running its annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, as well as all week from Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30.

Pumpkin carving stations are on site and there are also attractions which include a corn cob catapult and spooky trail.

East Grange Farm

Grange Farm, High Shincliffe, Durham DH1 2TB

Driving time from Newcastle: 37 minutes

East Grange Farm boasts a whopping 70,000 pumpkins to choose from across their 20 acres of patch.

Pumpkin-lovers can visit the site on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9, Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16 and then from Wednesday, October 19 until the site runs out of supplies.

Entry must be pre-booked online and costs £5 per person and this fee is taken off any pumpkin purchased, with the price of pumpkins ranging from £1 to £12.

Whitehouse Farm

Whitehouse Farm Centre, Morpeth NE61 6AW

Driving time from Newcastle: 27 minutes

Whitehouse Farm in Morpeth are running a Halloweek Spooktacular from Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30.

As well as visiting Penny Pumpkin at the pumpkin patch, there's a witches and wizards school, spooktacular show and fancy dress competition.

Both adult and child entries cost £13.45 when booked online, and the kid's entry comes with a pumpkin included in the price. Adults can purchase their own for an extra fee whilst stocks last.

Hall Hill Farm

Hall Hill Farm, Lanchester, Durham DH7 0TA

Driving time from Newcastle: 36 minutes

Hall Hill Farm are putting on a Spooky Half Term of events from Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30. The farm is also open on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16.

As well as giant scarecrows, a haunted sheep race, a mini monster maze and trick or treating, there is also a sought-after pumpkin patch.

Booking is required for the event with entry costing £9.25 - the price of a pumpkin is not included in that fee.
